Opening Scene Basic Information

Mystery

Yes, my group will be doing an opening scene for a mystery film. We chose mystery because we all conveniently watch mystery shows. We also know a few of the basic conventions mystery films have so we already had some ideas for what we should do. Speaking of the basic conventions let's go into the basic conventions of mystery that I will be using in or opening scene.
(Please note I will not list all conventions just a few from each category.)

Cinematography:

Shot Types:

  • Close- Up: We will use a close up to show the phone in our opening to signify how important what's on the phone is.
  • Medium Close-Up: We will show different parts of the dead body with a medium close up
  • Long Shot: We will use a long shot in order to show the surroundings by the dead body. Also during the flashback to show the girl in distress.

Camera Movements:

  • Tracking/Panning: We are going ton use this so that we can have a clean transition from women to stalker and it will help show how far/close the stalker really is.
  • Handheld: We will use this to help give a sense of reality to the viewer.
  • Zoom Shot: The zoom shot will help go from a medium close-up to a close-up.
  • Tilting: We will use this to give a feeling of disorientation.

Camera Angles:

  • High Angle: We will use this to make the dead girl look vulnerable and powerless.
  • P.O.V Shot: Show what the girl is seeing when she is looking around for the stalker.
  • Over the Shoulder: This will show the stalker taking the picture of the girl and sending it to her.

Mise-En-Scene:

Lighting:

  • Low Key Lighting: We will use this to create shadows in the flashback
  • Back Lighting: We will use this to help create silhouettes in the flashback for the stalker.

Setting:

  • The setting will be by a building in the parking lot fist part of our film. In the flashback it will still be by the building but on the sidewalk where the girl is walking.

Decor:

  • This is filmed outside so there is no decor that will be involved.

Props:

  • Knife
  • Phone
  • Clear Plastic Bag

Costumes:

  • Girl: White Shirt and Blue Jeans
  • Stalker: Black clothing

Hair:

  • Girl: In the beginning her hair is messy, in the flashback it will be neat.
  • Stalker: Hair will not be shown

Make-up:

  • None, the stalkers face is not shown and the girl will be natural

Sound/ Audio:

Music:

  • For our music we will be using eerie music with no lyrics. in the beginning it will be soft but as the suspense builds we will slowly increase the volume of it.

Dialogue:

  • There is none

Sound:

  • Diegetic: There will be police sirens and footsteps.
  • Nondiegetic: Heavy breathing and the music/soundtrack.

Editing:

Cuts:

  • The only cut we know we will use is a match cut between the same phone at 2 different times.

Transition:

  • Fade in/Out while we are showing credits
